For early birds, you can choose the optional land tour in Mandalay to get to know the city before going on a cruise. The land tour comprises a few well-known tourist attractions which we can not forget to mention is Mahamuni Pagoda. The Mahamuni Pagoda is the largest pilgrimage temple of Buddha in Mandalay where stores a 6.5 tons Buddha image covered in 15-centimeter-thick gold leaves. Located not far away, you can take a short walk around the Shwenandaw Monastery - a teak wood monastery standing still after the bombarding WWII. At the foot of Mandalay Hill, you also make a visit at the Kuthodaw Pagoda built from 1868 to preserve religious Buddhist scriptures with 720 tablets including 1460 pages - it is now considered “the biggest book” in the world.

After getting on board, we will start our journey with a delicious lunch made by cruise’s chef to tank up your energy for a stop at Sagaing. Sagaing hills used to be Shan Kingdom’s capital city and now is the home of thousand monks and nuns with a great number of monasteries and the highlighted one is Soon U Pon Nya Shin. Afterward, we will experience the working routine performed by skilled craftsmen in a silversmith in Ywataung village.

We get back on board and set sail to Amarapura in the late afternoon. The city Amarapura, which is also known as the name the City of Immortals, used to be the formerly prosperous capital of Myanmar. Now the city is filled with the clacking sounds of weaving looms and silk at the workshop.

Thereupon, at around 5:15 p.m, we take a leisurely walk along U Bein Bridge built across the Taungthaman Lake and originally from teak wood since 1847. After the spectacular sunset on the bridge, we continue our cruise until the boat docks at Gawein jetty and spend the evening in Sin Kyun.

Day 02 SIN KYUN TO MINGUN

Rise and shine for an early morning at Sin Kyun. We will start the tour at 7 a.m to catch the local cultivating life of the villagers in Sin Kyun.

We go back on board and start sailing at 8 a.m for a half-an-hour ride to Mingun. At this quiet town, we hop on the ox-cart to head to Mingun Pahtodawgyi Pagoda - an unfinished enormous monument of the 18th century on the bank of the Irrawaddy River. We make our next stop at the giant Mingun Bell - the second largest bell in the world that still rings. And then we will stroll around Hsinbyumei Pagoda which entirely covered in white color and created to commemorate Queen Hsinbyumei.

Around 10:30 a.m, we head back on our cruise’s schedule to sail to the south. Along the way, you can catch a glimpse of untouched landscapes covered by the tamarind trees and dotted by the white pagodas. On the river bank, local women are having a chat while washing the clothes. It is time for you to relax and lay back at the Kansi Panorama Lounge.

The Sanctuary Ananda will dock at the confluence of the Ayeyarwady and Chindwin rivers. While enjoying your dinner on cruise, remember to wait for the floating lanterns passing down on the river.

Day 03 PAKOKKU TO BAGAN

Freshen up for the day with a healthy morning routine - meditation and yoga on the sun deck! The boat starts sailing again from 6 a.m and rides straight to the south to reach Pakokku. After WW II ended, the city rises above with its famous tobacco and sugar palm, also known as jaggery.

From 9 a.m, we will ride on the trishaw to the bustle local market where we can feast our eyes and stomach with loads of stacks and boxes of exotic tropical fruits and vegetables. Leaving the market, we will get to see the cheroot factory where you can witness the amazingly quick and skillful hands of the women rolling cigars.

We get back on board at 11:30 a.m to get ready for the next stop - Bagan. The city Bagan appears in front of travelers’ eyes with a mesmerizing charm of numerous red-brick temples stretching on a green plantation. Bagan was also recognized as the World Heritage by UNESCO just recently in July 2019. Ananda Temple is the most well-preserved and a masterpiece in Bagan built from 1105 AD. Walking inside, you will be amazed by its massive space and four golden Buddha images kept from the 11th century.

Having finished with Ananda Temple, we travel to Htilominlo Temple established a few years later than Ananda. This three-story temple is believed to be the very spot that King Htilominlo was destined to be King.

Our last stop for today’s schedule will be on the ground of Pyathatgyi Temple. Waiting until late afternoon, prepare yourself to be stunted by the sky turning to glow red - the color of a burning sun dropping behind the top of Pyathatgyi Temple by the Ayeyarwady River.

Dinner on board will be served in traditional Shan style and enjoy a unique, warming performance by the locals.

Day 04 BAGAN TO SALE

Going on a hot-air balloon flight might take you up to the roof! You need to sign up prior 1 day to the cruise’s staff to let them arrange your morning flight at 5:30 a.m. Watching Bagan’s plantation from above with the panoramic view from the hot -air balloon is the most spectacular thing to do in this ancient temples city.

To continue with the charming Bagan where we left off yesterday, we will head to visit another vibrant market - Nyaung U Market. This market sells not only daily crops and supplies but also displays a wide range of lacquerwares.

Right after strolling around the market, we proceed to the golden Shwezigon Pagoda. Being the first grand monument built follow traditional Mon style of the Burmese and the first pagoda to allow having nat (spirit image) inside, Shwezigon Pagoda has become significant to the heart of Burmese people. Two value relics are kept safe inside the pagoda two bones and a tooth from Gautama Buddha, which comes along with an interesting story about Buddhism. On the way returning to the boat for lunch, we stop by a workshop in Myinkaba to observe craftsmen creating art on lacquerwares.

We will be on the ship by noon at around 12:30 p.m to continue sailing downstream to Sale. On the way, we can see those original oil-well pumps - people call it “nodding donkeys” on the edge of the river in Chauk.

It normally takes about 4 hours to get to Sale and we will arrive at 4:30 p.m. This small town is the perfect place to get around on foot or by trishaw. After spending a little time to get to know the town, we take our visit to Yoke Sone Kyang Monastery made from teak wood with Burmese architecture and patterns. The tour of the day ends with a quick look at Thatana Kyaung Temple built from bamboo. Dinner is served on the cruise.

Day 05 MINBU TO MAGWE TO MINHLA

In the morning, ship sets sail to Magwe. But before getting there, we will come across Minbu Village at noon. In Minbu Village, you will be taken to Nga Ka Pwe Taung - which means “Dragon Lake” - the lake is a unique site that not many visitors to Myanmar have a chance to cross by.

The ship stops at Magwe and we take our time to explore the town at 2 p.m. Our first stop in Magwe is a golden pagoda on a hilltop called Myat Than Lun Paya. Later in the afternoon, going along the river, we will reach Minhla and stop for the night.

Day 06 MINHLA FORT TO THAWUTTI TO THAYET

In Minhla, we pay a visit to a military construction built from the Konbaung era. It is a concrete construction to make it a resist fortress during the British invasion in the 2nd Anglo-Burmese War. Walking a little further, we reach a lovely village called Thawutti at 10:30 a.m.

Spend your afternoon onboard relaxing and we will continue sailing to Thayet and moor overnight.

Day 07 THAYET TO PYAY

The 7th of our voyage will take you to colonial houses which make a perfect match for a postcard as well as some mystical white pagodas.

Pyay is also a place to stop by an alluring pagoda.

Have you ever heard of a Buddha image wearing gold sunglasses? You can start your search here in Shwe Daung Village at Shwe Myet Hman Pagoda. Quite an epic scene to see!

We return to the Sanctuary Ananda at around 6:30 p.m.

Day 08 PYAY TO HTONBO

Continuing with Pyay, we make our trip rewinding back in time to the Pyu Dynasty when visiting Thayekhittata - a display of stupas vary in sizes built between the 4th and 13th centuries.

On our next stop, let’s make way to get to Shwesandaw Paya. The holy pagoda not only makes a great imprint in terms of size but also has become a sacred place when taking charge of storing strands of Buddha’s hair and actual tooth. Such holy items are now annually celebrated during the full moon in November. From afar, the 10-meter-high Buddha statue strike right in the view of travelers.

We have lunch onboard and experience the facilities on the cruise whilst sailing 29 miles more to get to Htonbo.

Day 09 AKAUK TAUNG TO KENAUNG TO ZALUN

Have a lovely breakfast on the ship before getting off for sightseeing at Akauk Taung. In this town, it is time for you to show your techniques and skills in photography because you will dig deep into magnificent caves.

The town’s name in English is Tax Mountain and it was named in the 19th century from numerous images of Buddhas carved into a steep cliffside.

We take a short break at Kenaung Village and watch the daily life of the local people. On the street, the children often play a ball game called “chinlone” which is a traditional team ball sports.

We get back on board and have lunch on the way to Zalun. Savor your stomach and your eyes with the breathtaking view from your private balcony. Boredom is never on Sanctuary Ananda’s dictionary, we can arrange extensive services for you to choose from to relax, seek stimulation or have a chat with someone.

Day 10 ZALUN TO DANYPHYU

Wake up early in the morning and join in the healthy routine with sunrise meditation and yoga practice. Then we will spend our time in a small port town called Zalun for the rest of the morning.

You’ll get to experience the trishaw again to make a visit at Pyi Taw Pya Pagoda - which means “The home return from aboard” marking the return of unbreakable Buddha statue from England. During the colonial time, the British Army stole the images of Buddha. After that event, the Queen of England kept having a severe headache. Soon after, these figures were put back where it belonged and the Queen then had a miraculous recovery. Head a little to the south where located a town call Danuphyu. In this town, we will head toward a Monastery and a Memorial figure of general Maha Bandula at Pali University. Along with the river flow, make a drop off at the Thambyadine Spa by the L’Occitane. A special performance and a farewell dinner would put on a show to send our best regards to all passengers.
